The Department of Geology and Geophysics is dedicated to the scientific study of all aspects of the solid Earth, from fundamental processes that shape it to knowledge that benefits society. Our graduates make significant contributions in environmental geology, energy solutions and understanding seismic hazards, as well as contributing fundamental new knowledge about the physical, chemical and biological aspects of the Earth. Research That Leads to Discovery

Research in the Department of Geology and Geophysics addresses fundamental questions about the processes and history of the solid Earth and applies this knowledge for the benefit of society. The research programs of many faculty are broadly interdisciplinary, blurring the boundaries between classical geological disciplines and also between fundamental and applied research.
