We embody the Aggie Core Values and model them in every student interaction.
What is academic advising?
Academic advisors are responsible for empowering students to achieve their academic and career goals. They build relationships with students aiming to maximize undergraduate student retention and timely graduation. They clarify procedures and academic requirements for specific programs or majors and encourage engagement with the resources of Texas A&M University.
What are the responsibilities of academic advisor?
Advising
Academic advisors collaborate with students to understand and develop realistic and attainable educational and academic goals and provide input on related majors, minors, future education and career options that best align with student goals. They review students’ academic records and counsel them regarding core and degree course selection and the implication of selected courses and/or exception requests. They proactively refer students to academic, professional, and health and wellness resources. They maintain strict adherence to FERPA in all matters. They assess individual students' stage of academic development and promote their growth by determining suitable developmental tasks. Our advisors provide exceptional experiences for undergraduate students to foster a sense of belonging and encourage a lifelong connection with Departments and the College.
Advising Processes
Advisors educate students about and assist them with academic processes such as registration, add/drop, Q drops, withdrawals, and change of curriculum submissions in accordance with department, college, and university policies. In those departments that require the Undergraduate Degree Planner, they help students complete them by identifying and planning courses that satisfy degree requirements and then review planners for accuracy. They consult their departmental leadership to ensure correct transfer and course substitution and submission via the Undergraduate Adjustment System for Dean, Provost, and Registrar approval. Advisors utilize EAB Navigate to manage and document student notifications.
Programming for Retention
Advisors monitor progress of students through their undergraduate career by reviewing and assessing academic records to determine status of progression and completion of degree requirements. They also refer students to additional intervention and guidance recommended to reaching their academic goals. They implement targeted advising, student success, retention events and academic campaigns such as degree-checkups, midterm interventions, or intrusive probation advising as needed.
Where do I find an advisor?
Our advisors are located in advising centers throughout the campus, based on location, courses of study and/or related commonalities. Texas A&M has a mobile application called Navigate360 Student to help you stay on track throughout your college experience. Navigate360 Student allows you to schedule appointments with your academic advisors and tutoring on campus. Direct links to your advisors' Navigate appointment schedules are located below with their contact information.
