Faculty boast a broad expertise across a variety of fields within the broader humanistic tradition. We teach and produce scholarship on global cultural issues within the context of linguistic, national, and transnational traditions.

The department houses programs in Hispanic Studies, Spanish, Modern Languages, Africana Studies, Jewish Studies, Religious Studies, and Classics. Languages taught in the department include Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, ancient Greek, and Latin.

Our department’s goal is to lead the college’s efforts in responding to the need for a globally minded population and workforce. The study of modern languages and cultures, as well as the myriad cultural, political, and social issues that are common concerns throughout the world prepares students for a globally interconnected future.
