The Department of Communication has a well-established Honors plan.  Exceptional undergraduate students who graduate with Honors in Communication will receive the Communication Honors distinction on their official A&M transcript, be recognized at a University-wide honors recognition ceremony, and receive an honors medallion to wear at commencement.

Benefits of Communication Honors include

  • Enjoy engaging and compelling approaches to course content.
  • Participate in a variety of honors course arrangements, ranging from small classes that feature seminar-style learning, to embedded honors sections within regular courses, to the option of customizing learning through course contracting.
  • Take at least six honors courses from Honors faculty members.
  • Get to know professors, which is essential for students who need letters of recommendation for internships, scholarships, and applications to graduate school, professional school or law school.
  • Benefit from early registration privileges.

Eligibility

Students wishing to apply for the Communication honors plan must:

  1. Be majoring in Communication (COMM), Telecommunication Media Studies (TCMS), or USLA- Journalism Studies.
  2. Earn the following scores:
    1. Continuing Students: have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPR at Texas A&M University.
    2. Incoming Freshman: earn a 1310 on the SAT (reading/writing + math, with minimums of 660 and 620, respectively) OR a 28 on the ACT (minimum 27 in English, Reading, and Math), AND be in the top 15% of your high school class.
  3. Be able to complete the plan requirements prior to the expected graduation date.

The Department of Communication has strong linkages to the University Honors program. Students in the Department of Communication are among TAMU students tapped for Phi Beta Kappa each year.  The department also has an Honor Society, Lambda Pi Eta.

Accepted students will complete at least 18 total honors credits, including:

  • At least 12 total honors credits in Communication
  • At least 9 total honors credits at the 300/400 level
  • At least 6 total honors credits at the 300/400 level in Communication
  • At least 3 honors credits at the 400 level in Communication
  • At least a 3.5 cumulative GPR at Texas A&M upon graduation
  • At least a 3.25 honors GPR at Texas A&M upon graduation
