Multi-chapter Thesis Option
In this option, you will write a multi-chapter thesis, generally 100 pages in length. You will begin work on your thesis after you complete your formal coursework.
Your research will be based in primary source material. In order to successfully defend your thesis, you must convince the judges that your thesis has an original narrative and makes an original contribution to historical scholarship.

Article Thesis Option
In this option, you will write an article-length thesis for publication in a peer-reviewed venue. You will begin work on your thesis after you complete your formal coursework. Your primary advisor will help you choose a publishing venue.
Your research will be based in primary source material and make an original contribution to the historical scholarship. In order to successfully defend your thesis, you must convince the judges that your thesis is ready for submission to the selected venue.

Non-Thesis Option
The M.A. in History non-thesis option requires a minimum of 36 hours of coursework. A minimum of 21 hours must be taken within the department with at least 9 more hours taken in a supporting field.
In this option, you have more than one area of specialization, but both may be within history. However, you may not use any History 691 (research) hours as part of the degree plan.
You will receive the M.A. degree upon completion of the required coursework and passing comprehensive written and oral examinations.
