Explore a wide range of social topics and issues with a major in sociology. This major will give you a solid foundation in the knowledge and skills needed to address real-world social issues and problems.

Through a major in sociology, you'll learn how to:

  • Be aware of other’s beliefs and behaviors and understanding why they believe and behave as they do
  • Address real-world problems and issues by developing realistic and equitable solutions
  • Identify complex problems and ideas and review related information to analyze, develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
  • Communicate effectively in writing and speech as appropriate for the needs of the audience
  • Develop and use visual aids, graphs, tables and charts
  • Give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting at inappropriate times
  • Monitor/assess performance of yourself, other individuals or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action
  • Manage your own time and the time of others
  • Analyze and interpret data
  • Identify the underlying patterns and principles of qualitative and quantitative information and explain what that information means and how it can be used
  • Bring others together and try to reconcile differences
  • Establish trust and ensure input from all members of a group

Opportunities within the Sociology Major

Some courses include hands-on service-learning opportunities in which students connect service and/or research in the community with course material.

If you seek to enter applied fields, we have a highly praised internship program that offers practical experience in community nonprofit organizations, government agencies and businesses.

Students accepted into our honors program have opportunities to work one-on-one with professors engaged in sociological research.
