Assistant Professor, Computational Media Science

The Department of Communication and Journalism in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University invites applications for two tenure-track assistant professors, each with research expertise in computational media science. Both positions are full-time, 9-month academic appointments, starting August 1, 2024.   Responsibilities include conducting high quality research, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, effectively mentoring graduate/undergraduate students, and contributing service that furthers initiatives in the department.

Preference will be given to scientists with research programs focused on advancing understanding of digital media’s influence on society.  Applications are welcome from a wide range of communication disciplines and subdisciplines, including media studies, political communication, strategic communication, journalism, health communication, and organizational communication, as well as others.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Communication or a related field, with expertise in computational data analytics.
Preferred Qualifications
  •  A research program on digital media that increases understanding of contemporary social phenomena and/or problems, possibly for the purpose of developing interventions.
  • Experience in sentiment analysis, topic modeling, network analysis, linguistic analysis, image as data.
  • Ability to contribute to our undergraduate and graduate training programs by teaching courses on research methods and their areas of expertise.

Assistant Professor, Critical Media Studies

This is a full-time, 9-month academic appointment, starting August 1, 2024.  Responsibilities include conducting high quality research, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, effectively mentoring graduate/undergraduate students, and contributing service that furthers initiatives in the department.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in Communication or a related field and proficiency applying critical theoretical frameworks and methodologies to analyze media-related phenomena. Preference will be given to scholars who employ critical perspectives to advance understanding of contemporary social problems and issues. Sample research areas include but are not limited to environmental justice and sustainability, critical race and ethnic studies, Latina/o/x studies, Africana and/or African American studies, Indigenous studies, Latin American media studies, Asian American diaspora studies, critical gender and/or women’s studies, queer studies, religion and/or religious studies, critical/cultural studies of health and medicine, democratic and/or civic engagement, critical internet studies, surveillance studies, and science technology and society (STS). Applications are welcome from a wide range of communication disciplines and subdisciplines, including media studies, rhetorical studies, political communication, strategic communication, journalism, health communication, and organizational communication, and other sub disciplines and cognate fields so long as the applicant is operating from within critical and/or cultural studies perspectives.

Associate Professor of Practice or Professor of Practice in Journalism

The Department of Communication and Journalism in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University invites applications for two full-time, Academic Professional Track (Non-Tenure) Professor of the Practice positions, each with a 9-month academic appointment. The positions will start as early as January 1, 2024 but no later than August 1, 2024. Professors of the Practice are faculty who have had primary employment in industries outside of academia, who can provide professional training to complement academic foundation courses. We are particularly interested in candidates who can provide such training in one or more areas related to: multimedia journalism reporter, including multimedia writing and editing for digital and emerging media; investigative reporting; bilingual journalism; sports multimedia reporting; broadcast journalism; public affairs and government reporting; graphics and visual journalism; data journalism; rural and community journalism; entrepreneurial and/or business journalism; health, environment and/or science reporting; and editing for digital and emerging media.

The Department of Communication and Journalism offers and administers PhD, MA, BA, and BS degrees. It has over 40 faculty members, more than 35 communication graduate students, and over 1,700 undergraduate students. We currently administer a university studies journalism degree to just over 80 students, with another 80 students minoring in journalism. We wish to grow journalism to between 400 and 500 majors over the next five years, with additional growth of the minor under our mission of promoting competent, engaged, informed, and ethical citizen communicators. Responsibilities for this position include teaching three courses each semester and service to the department. Service may include involvement in the development of undergraduate level courses and curricula.

Qualifications

Rank of the appointment is open (Associate Professor of the Practice or Full Professor of the Practice), depending on qualifications.  A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communication or related discipline and significant accomplishment in an applied setting is required.  Successful candidates will have distinguished records in the journalistic profession and show promise of having a distinguished record in journalism education.
